I’ve been nursing for a long time.
More than 2 decades.
And I love my job.
I work in the public health sector, within the hospital and in the community.
I’ve worked for a NGO (Non Government Organisation) and I’ve worked alongside General Practitioners.
I’ve been involved with projects and research that is focussed on older persons assessment and care.
I am a member of various older persons clinical networks and end of life advisory groups.
I thought I knew a lot about Australia’s aged care system…but wow, did I learn so much more when I became a carer for my Dad.
If it was challenging for me to navigate the system when I worked in this industry, then how trying must it be for people outside this industry?
Actually, I did already know how difficult it is because clients and their care givers tell me this every day.
I can’t change My Aged Care…but I can explain to people what it really means in plain, simple language.
I can’t tell consumers which is the best package provider for their family…but I can suggest the questions they need to ask to facilitate the best choice.
I can’t expect that what we did for my Dad will work for someone else’s family…but I can offer an insight into why we chose to do what we did…and if you think it might work for you too, then you’re already ahead.
So here we are.
If you are just about to embark on this experience, supporting your loved one through the labyrinth that is older persons care, or if you are already in the midst of it and trying to make sense of it all, then I’m glad you’ve found my blog.
Take what works for you from my blog and make it your experience…one step at a time.
